At an event in Chennai, Tata Motors showcased their new safety technology, ESCsmart, an electronic stability control (ESC) technology which was deployed in their Prima and Signa range of trucks. The launch of this new intelligent braking functionality made the automotive giant the first OEM in India to deploy ESC in the medium and heavy commercial vehicle (MHCV) segment.
This new safety technology will help reduce more than 50 per cent of rollover crashes and 25 per cent of loss-of-control crashes by increasing vehicle stability and safety, claimed the company.
The ESC was developed in partnership with WABCO India, which is known for its intelligent braking and vehicle monitoring technologies. This solution provides vehicle stability, reduces accident risk, repair cost and improves vehicle uptime, thus enhancing road safety and efficiency of commercial vehicles.
“Safety is of paramount importance to us and the introduction of new safety technologies further reiterates our commitment to strengthen the safety performance of our products and introduce future technologies, ahead of time.We are delighted to work with class leading global suppliers like WABCO to develop innovative and technology leading products for our Indian customers,” said Girish Wagh, Head of Commercial Vehicles, Tata Motors Ltd.
The ESC functionality is applied along with anti-lock braking system (ABS), taking vehicle safety to the next level. While ABS is instrumental in vehicle safety under different road conditions, ESC provides safety under the demanding conditions of various handling manoeuvres. The ESC can predict forthcoming instability and automatically intervenes by applying brakes to avoid rollover, skidding and jack-knifing. It measures vehicle’s lateral acceleration, roll about its vertical axis through sensors, and applies brakes on selective wheels to control instability. The ESC is beneficial in preventing jack-knifing in tractor-trailer, improving directional stability during dynamic manoeuvres, and preventing roll over during turning at high speed.
The ESCsmart comes with some other technologies included in it, including automatic traction control (ATC) and hill-start aid (HSA). ATC prevents wheel spin during acceleration on slippery surfaces like ice or water or even during mining. This also helps to increase tire life by preventing loss of traction of one or more wheels.
The HSA component of the ESCsmart prevents vehicle roll-back during stop-and-go situations on an uphill gradient. This can help minimise clutch and brake liner wear.
The ESCsmart technology will be available in select Prima trucks and tractors as well as in certain Signa long platform trucks (LPT).
