Real driving emissions will require robust emission control systems which might affect fuel efficiency on a significant scale. Therefore, powertrain designers have to focus on improving fuel efficiency. Ravi Damodaran, CTO, Greaves Cotton believes, technologies such as gasoline direct injection, turbocharging, variable valve lift, low temperature combustion, hybrid electric powertrains will find usage to meet the future emission norms.
What are the recent trends in automotive powertrains?
In order to meet the needs in an increasingly competitive market, the automotive powertrains are constantly undergoing upgradations for improved performance, emissions, fuel efficiency and reliability. Powertrains are getting smaller, cleaner, more fuel efficient and all these are enabled by an increased electronics content. They are all impacted by the BS6 legislations across segments. There will be costs to meet these emissions norms which are a drastic reduction from the previous BS4 norms. Exhaust after treatment and engine management systems will play a significant part in powertrain performance. Besides, the market will see increased penetration of hybrids in the short and medium term.
The increasing pollution levels require alternatives of vehicle engines and fuel options that would be both economically viable and eco-friendly. Addressing this need, there is a demand for clean mobility solutions powered by energy efficient and high performing CNG powertrain solutions, suitable to both rural and urban commute.
Also, do you see this as a challenge or as an opportunity?
Introduction of legislations which demands more technology on the powertrains will certainly benefit the technology suppliers. Greaves has invested in a fuel agnostic solutions approach a few years ago and is poised to take advantage of the three wheeler market segment shifting to cleaner fuels such as CNG in the short term, and hybrids and electrics in the longer term.
How is this decision going to impact other OEM manufacturers? And what will be the future of diesel engine powertrain systems?
Diesel powertrain systems suppliers also supply to other sectors such as power generation, farm, construction and heavy duty commercial transportation. These sectors will continue their normal growth and the demand for diesel engine management systems and emission equipment will increase as these sectors will also be regulated on emissions in the next two years.
Keeping all these changing dynamics in mind, what is your observation regarding the powertrain market?
Automotive powertrains will undergo changes in the near future driven by both market needs and the legislations to clean up the environment. Diesel powertrains will continue to be the preferred option in heavy duty applications and will gain acceptance as legislation norms tighten on CO2. Automatic transmission, which is already gaining acceptance due to increasing traffic congestion, will increase penetration as hybrids are introduced. Electrification, starting with mild hybrids will be accelerated by the next emission norms which is expected to drive higher fuel efficiency. The future belongs to a mobility landscape that is fuel efficient, cleaner, and greener tomorrow.
