Owing to their varied strengths, Cobots bring in ingenuity and creativity by taking care of repetitive manual labor activities so that the employees can climb up the skills ladder. Omron has seen a very strong interest for cobots from many industry segments, says Sameer Gandhi, MD, Omron Automation, India. In this interview with Rakesh Rao, sheds light on applictions of robots and how they are improving productivity of automakers and their suppliers.
What kind of robotic solutions do you offer to Indian automotive industry?
Omron’s robotic portfolio has a diverse range of solutions for the automotive industry - all working towards creating a customised intelligent autonomous manufacturing environment which is an important perquisite to attain the real value out of a smart manufacturing set up. Whether additive, advanced or traditional manufacturing processes, Omron has flexible robotic solutions to create the right level of human-machine harmony fitting the needs of the shop floor.
Our solutions – cobots, SCARA robots, articulated robots and parallel robots as well as vision system – synchronise movement, facilitate part movement, and enable assembly of very intricate designs with speed and precision delivering numerous benefits such as increase uptime & through put, high levels of safety and utilization of less space and energy.
Also, Omron Mobile Robots - known as world’s smartest and most productive autonomous intelligent vehicles - are adding a lot of value to many ancillary industries in the automotive domain like tyre makers by creating collaboration between human beings & machines to increase productivity in varied operations.
How is demand for your cobots from OEMs and auto component makers in India?
In the short span of introducing cobots in India, we have seen a very strong interest from many industry segments, including OEMs and auto component makers, for various reasons. Omron’s cobots come with several industry leading features like integrated vision and easy programming which help in easy setup and ease of use. Also, Omron offers a wide portfolio ranging from panel components, PLCs, safety components, vision, etc, which is extremely helpful to the customers to build complete one stop solutions.
Are cobots more suited for SMEs as they are affordable (compared to conventional robots) and are flexible in application?
Cobots make themselves suitable for both small and big shop floors owing to the varied strengths they are endowed with. Cost is indeed an important factor however what matters is the long-term value an SME is looking forward to achieving out of implementation of robotics. For example, as you have also indicated, flexibility is one of the major concerns for SMEs. By replacing fixed conveyors and by actualising the shift from a conventional ‘hard-tooled cell’ to a progressive ‘flexible integrated cell’, cobots bring in greater flexibility to the shop floors resulting into improved productivity and efficiency.
These robots also bring in ingenuity and creativity by taking care of repetitive manual labor activities so that the employees can climb up the skills ladder to focus more on higher-level tasks demanding more complex skills which is a very important requisite for their evolution as they climb the value chain.
Industries (including automotive) in India are looking to start their journey towards Industry 4.0. Will it lead to rise in usage of robots in future?
Industry 4.0 is a highly dynamic domain with robotics as one of the key elements. As the automotive industry continues its quest to achieve global standards, the robot market will continue with its upward trend. Globally, as per various studies, it is expected that the market may touch $ 1 billion worth by 2020 from the current level of $ 95 million.
How do you intend to grow your business further?
As an industry leader, we continue to introduce new products on a regular basis. We will be utilising the new product launches as well as increase interaction with our customers to be able to build more innovative solutions for the industry.
