Europe's largest carmaker, Volkswagen, launched the new Jetta for the Indian market. The Jetta comes in three variants - Trendline, Comfortline and Highline. The range starts from Rs 13.87 lakh and goes up to 19.77 lakh for the top-of-the-line Highline trim with the acclaimed DSG gearbox. All prices are ex-showroom, Mumbai. The petrol variant does not come in the Highline trim, that distinction is reserved only for the diesel model.
The new Jetta does not bear a radical departure from the existing design. The car has been given some exterior tweaks, which include new front and rear bumpers, new fog lamps, revised headlamps and new front grille. The rear gets revised tail lamps and a redesigned boot lid. The top-end version will also get projector headlights with cornering function and LED DRLs.
The interiors have been made with attention to detail and now feel and look more classy and premium. Changes on the inside include a new three-spoke, flat bottom steering wheel. It also houses controls for the audio system and cruise control. The seats are covered in fabric or can be optioned in leather as well.
There will be a choice of both, petrol and diesel engines powering the facelifted Jetta. The petrol will be powered by the familiar 1.4 litre, turbocharged four cylinder engine generating122 bhp and 200 Nm of torque. Transmission on the gasoline engine will only be a six-speed manual. Volkswagen claims a fuel average of 14.69 kmpl. The diesel Jetta is powered by a 2.0 litre, turbocharged, four-cylinder block producing 140 bhp of power and a respectable 320 Nm of torque. The diesel gets the six-speed manual and also the six-speed automatic DSG gearbox (only on the Highline trim). The manual transmission equipped Jetta delivers the highest fuel efficiency figure of 19.33 kmpl. The automatic variant crosses 16.96 kilometres in a litre of fuel.
Safety has been given paramount importance. The Jetta now comes with six airbags, brake pad wear indicator, parking sensors and fatigue detection system. These features are standard on all variants. Driving dynamism is enhanced by features such as ABS, ESP, ASR and hill hold control.
The 2015 Jetta will fight for market share with Toyota Corolla Altis, Chevrolet Cruze, Hyundai Elantra and Skoda Octavia.
