Renault Design India Becomes True Centre for Creation

Renault’s Mumbai-based satellite design centre, Renault Design India, will now design vehicles for the Indian market and other regional markets. Its role will go from initial Project design through to the finalised mock-up of a vehicle. The centre, which has been operational for almost 2 years, played a pivotal role in several highly successful projects in 2006, including the Logan Steppe concept car presented at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show and the MMI (Man Machine Interface) concept car presented at the 2006 Paris Motor show then the 2007 Geneva Motor Show. It also carried out R&D work focusing on top-end fabrics in order to tap into India’s amazingly rich textile-oriented heritage.

The objectives of Renault Design India are to assist with current and future range development in India, develop a perceived quality expertise, develop a range of automobile accessories, from design through to production and integrate Renault Design India within the overall design process, meaning everything from initial design to the production of mock-ups and prototypes, including the digital design phase, the lynchpin of our current operations.

New Porsche 911 GT2

Porsche is ready to introduce the new 911 GT2 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The most powerful 911 so far homologated for road use, the new 911 GT2 expresses the power and performance potential of the fastest-ever 911 right from the start and even at standstill.

Available exclusively with rear-wheel drive and a manual six-speed gearbox, this high-performance athlete accelerates to 100 kph in just 3.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 329 kph (204 mph) on average fuel consumption of just 12.5 litres per 100 km (equal to 22.6 mpg imp) in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), thus offering a level of fuel economy regarded as quite impossible in this performance class just a few years ago. The power unit of the new 911 GT2 is based on the six-cylinder boxer engine of the 911 Turbo, with air supply by two exhaust gas turbochargers featuring variable turbine geometry (VTG). The 3.6-litre boxer engine achieves its maximum output of 530 bhp (390 kW) at 6500 rpm, with maximum torque of 680 Nm maintained consistently between 2,200 and 4,500 rpm. With its unladen weight of 1,440 kg or 3,175 lb, finally, the 911 GT2 offers a power-to-weight ratio of just 2.72 kg/6.00 lb per horsepower.

The increase in engine power by 50 bhp over the "regular" power unit is provided in the new 911 GT2 by two turbochargers with a larger compressor wheel and a flow-optimised turbine housing raising turbocharger pressure to an even higher level. And for the first time Porsche’s engineers have combined the turbocharged engine with an expansion-type intake manifold – a genuine revolution on turbocharged power units. The expansion intake manifold uses the principle of oscillating air in the intake manifold during the cooler expansion phase, keeping the temperature of the fuel/air mixture lower than in the 911 Turbo. This, in turn, means a significant increase in all-round efficiency, with fuel consumption down by up to 15 per cent under full load despite the increase in engine output.

JCB India Seminar on Waste Management

JCB India Ltd conducted a seminar on waste management in Mumbai recently. This seminar is first of the four seminars addressing the issue, focusing on policy planning and strategy, management of municipal solid waste and treatment, solid waste management, and operable alternative methods. The seminar is an initiative of The Global Forum for Disaster Reduction (GFDR), and is organised by JCB India Ltd and New Media. The National Solid Waste Association of India (NSWAI) and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) are co-organisers of the event.

Jairaj Phatak, Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai, Sharad Kale, professor, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and Amit Gossain GM Marketing for JCB spoke at the seminar, which aimed to facilitate consensus and resolve conflict among the Municipal Corporation, medical professionals, environmentalists, and public and corporate sector bodies. The objective of the series of seminars is to identify and address the barriers to the effective implementation of policies and regulations in social waste management in Asia.

Speaking at the seminar, Vipin Sondhi, MD, JCB India Ltd. said “Rapid urbanization and the use of non-bio degradable materials has resulted in burdening our Earth with incomprehensible tons of waste. This is not only hazardous to health, but disturbs the ecological balance enough to provoke a series of natural disasters. JCB is on the forefront of the initiative to tackle waste in more effective and innovative ways through a range of world class specially designed machines.” “Today, when all developing countries are facing issues of solid waste management, our aim should be to put to use the best possible practices to achieve sustainability. We must address this challenge at its origin, as segregation at the source is a key for proper garbage disposal,” said Sharad Kale, Professor, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. The next seminars will be held at Kolkata, Hyderabad and Bangalore.
