India's largest automobile company by revenues Tata Motors and Europe's largest car maker Volkswagen Group have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, on the sidelines of the 87th Geneva International Motor Show to explore a possible joint technical collaboration or joint venture on vehicle architecture, engines and component sourcing. A formal announcement from the two companies is likely to be made. Several meetings including preliminary due diligence have taken place. To be sure, this is not a firm partnership, but both companies have agreed to discuss potential opportunities to develop vehicle platforms, share technology etc. Tata Motors MD, Guenter Butschek confirmed the talks and said they are in midst of a discussion. To a query sent to Volkswagen India last month, the spokesperson had said, Volkswagen Group is committed to the Indian market, as India is an integral part of its growth strategy – especially in the emerging markets. With its future programme “TOGETHER – strategy 2025” Volkswagen Group empowers its brands with new responsibilities in the respective regions.
