With Indian automotive sector have shown keen interest on developing EV technologies and allied infrastructure to achieve low carbon emissions, Altigreen Propulsion Labs is developing Drivetrain for electric vehicles that will not only meet needs of customers but also change the scenario in next six to 12 months, says Shalendra Gupta, CFO, Altigreen Propulsion Labs.
Give us a brief about your company and the products you offer
Altigreen Propulsion Labs, with its vision of carbon-free transportation, develops proprietary electric vehicle powertrains especially focused on emerging markets. The company has leading edge expertise in the design and manufacturing of a range of high reliability motors, generators and their drive systems, both hardware and software, for the electrification of road transport.
Altigreen’s integrated development of the entire drivetrain, including special EV gearboxes as well as battery management and IoT, delivers outstanding performance tuned to the needs of end-customers and vehicle manufacturers. Designed, developed and made in India, the company’s technology has over 85% domestic content. Altigreen’s patent portfolio spans over 60 countries with 19 patents granted.
Are you working with OEMs in India to develop E-mobility solutions?
The company is working with a number of OEMs in the electric auto-rickshaw space, to launch high performance, long-range auto-rickshaws. These transformative vehicles will be launched soon, some as early as in 2019 itself.
Do you think that the Indian auto component industry is ready for EVs?
Many companies in the industry are actively preparing themselves to support EVs. Altigreen has also developed numerous partners and vendors in order to create the eco-system for this essential transition.
Do you source components or you manufacture on your own?
All the components we use, including motors, power electronics, control electronics, gearboxes, wire harnesses and so on, are manufactured specifically to our proprietary designs, with full intellectual property developed by us. Some of them are manufactured on contract by our vendor-partners, others are done in-house. In general, most of the critical-to-quality processes are still done in-house although we do intend to outsource these as well, over time.
Which solutions are offered by you to the 2-wheeler EV segment? We are working on a modular platform for electric two-wheelers. The platform will offer OEMs and large B2B customers the option of creating customised high-speed electric scooters, step-throughs and bikes. The platform includes a chassis with suspension, electric drivetrain (motor and gearbox combo), controller, display and an IoT platform for superior connected experience. The platform will offer customizations in outer shell design, wheel size, option of drum brake or disc brake and a flexible IoT platform with built-in 4G, GPS and Bluetooth based on the Android platform.
Tell us about products developed by you?
We have products on offer (or nearing readiness) for last-mile cargo delivery across vehicle formats, that is, 2W, 3W and 4W.
What is the speciality of your EV powertrain?
Altigreen’s philosophy is to offer the customers products and solutions that excite them into adoption rather than asking them to compromise ‘for the sake of the planet’. So we set out to create proprietary technology designed and tested for India - driving profile, road conditions, environmental conditions, form factor, cost and other constraints. As a result, Altigreen enables new mobility platforms, that are future ready, in saleable price brackets, with ‘all indigenous’ technology, and 85+ per cent domestic value add. We offer end-to-end solutions that comprise the entire drivetrain.
Are there a sufficient number of EV powertrain providers in the Indian EV market?
As on date, Altigreen is the only provider of powertrains / drivetrains in India, which provides a full solution including motor, controller, vehicle control unit, gearbox/ transmission, wire harness, display, telematics and IoT. We are keen to see more.
