Zoomcar, India’s first self-drive car rental company announced the launch of Pedl, India’s first technology-enabled cycle sharing service. Pedl will primarily serve local use cases such as grocery shopping, errand running, and last-mile commuting. The point-to-point nature of the service offers significant flexibility to the end-user across the day.
Designed to complement Zoomcar’s existing car sharing business, Pedl imbibes the principle of “hyper-local urban mobility” by offering cycles at multiple pickup points across various neighborhoods in a city. At scale, Pedl will be present every 50-100 meters in a city, with the company hoping to cross 10,000 cycles on road by the end of 2017.
Pedl cycles are custom designed with aluminum alloy frames. They come equipped with drum brakes, anti-slip chains, airless solid tyres, and height adjustable seats for safety. These cycles are designed to support over 24 months of intensive use while ensuring low maintenance costs. Each cycle is outfitted with a multipurpose basket for convenience in travelling. Pedl’s robust IoT stack is an extension of Zoomcar’s Cadabra IoT platform and includes real-time GPS tracking, solar battery charging, and built-in alarms. The cycles are built with smart locks that use a QR Code in order to be unlocked.
“In recent times, we’ve observed a huge market gap for trips shorter than 5 kms and we firmly believe that the cycle 2.0 is best positioned to serve these use cases. Pedl strongly compliments our core car sharing service as we continue to make a meaningful contribution to air quality improvement across Indian cities,” said Greg Moran, CEO and CO-founder, Zoomcar.
After several weeks in pilot, Pedl presently operates over 500 cycles in Bangalore, Chennai and Kolkata. The cycles are available at HSR Layout in Bangalore, at Besant Nagar in Chennai, and Golf Greens in Kolkata. One can use a Pedl cycle by just walking up to a Pedl location, paying via Paytm, and dropping the cycle off when done at any of the Pedl locations. The company also has the option for anyone to become a host by allowing cycles to be placed at the individual’s residence.
Zoomcar aims to provide individuals with a convenient, affordable, and eco-friendly cycle sharing service for short trips around the city and expects a larger expansion inn 2018.
