There is a telltale transition towards lightweighting in the automotive industry. In this dynamic market, Henkel creates competitive advantage for its customers along the entire value chain of car manufacturing, says Barun Bharadwaj, Business Director, Transport and Metal, Henkel Adhesives Technologies India Pvt Ltd. By partnering with the customers, they understand their needs and come up with viable solutions.
High performance lightweight composites based on glass or carbon fibres in thermoplastic and thermosetting resins can be tailored to provide the right levels of strength where they are needed. For vehicle makers, this translates into reduced fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions along with enhanced safety and crash behaviour. Henkel works closely with its partners along the value chain to create ideal integrated solutions in composites that can be made cost-effectively, in high volumes and at high speed. Henkel provides sustainable solutions across structural adhesives, structural inserts and structural tapes. Its TEROSON range of products and solutions finds applications in pillars, rails, cross members, frames, chassis and engine mounts, among others. This results in improved joint integrity, increased stiffness, strength and section integrity.
Henkel’s products touch and influence each step of the manufacturing process of engines, transmissions, axles and related powertrain parts. Our technologies help our customers meet the demands of the industry by enabling lightweight initiatives, increased use of performance enhancing components, providing cost reductions through improved manufacturing efficiencies and utilising sustainable, green raw materials and processes.
Henkel offers a broad portfolio of solutions for car body assembly and strongly extends into sustainable raw material concepts and ultra-lightweight and high efficiency systems. Some of these solutions include high performance and customised adhesive solutions, sustainable product concepts and bio-based materials, noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) isolation and innovative lightweight solutions by alternative concepts with substrate mixes. Additionally, Henkel drives cost efficiency at customer process lines via value engineering and creative solutions to help meet the changing requirements. We also explore localisation as much as possible, alternate raw materials that are easily available in India and supplier partnerships.
We aim to increase awareness on Henkel’s broad portfolio of technologies that provide solutions for the entire automotive manufacturing value chain. We would also like to increase the prospect of working with our customers as early as possible, ideally at the design stage itself to allow for the right adhesive to be recommended or developed. This also helps support the designing of new applications. It is interesting to note that a minor change in the selection of adhesives at the early product design stage can provide much greater bond strength and improved quality.
