Glass plays a big role in automotive exterior. India being a hot country, sunlight can cause thermal discomfort. Sunlight transmits harmful UV radiation which is detrimental for the skin. In its quest to solve some these problems, Asahi India Glass Ltd has developed Dark Green UV Cut glass for the Indian market which reduces the thermal load inside the cabin and eliminates the UV radiation by more than 80 percent. It was launched in 2015 in Maruti Baleno, where it is present on side door glasses – Alpha and Zeta variant. In this interview, Amit Sood, Executive Director – Sales & Marketing, Asahi India Glass Ltd, explains the importance of glass in automotive and growth plans for the company.
Since its launch, how has been the response to “Dark Green UV Cut Glass” (both from OEM and aftermarket segment)?
Post implementation of this new technology product, Asahi India Glass (AIS) has been in deep engagement with new stake-holders at its customers on the perceived benefits of DGG UV cut glass with respect to human comfort, vehicle aesthetics and possible impact on improvement in vehicle’s fuel efficiency.
All OEMs have expressed deeper interest on the product and apart from doing their own in-house trials are collaborating with AIS to establish the impact of perceived benefits through an external agency. We are at the process of finalising the results, post which we expect our customers to take a favourable view on earlier adoption on existing and new models.
Apart from DGG UV cut glass few OEMs like Toyota, Fiat have also aligned and launched solar control glass/ heat absorbing glass solutions like solar control Yaris, Jeep Compass respectively.
Which segments (PV, SUV, luxury cars, etc) of the automotive market are main markets for “Dark Green UV Cut Glass”?
Due to unique hot climatic condition of our country and need for human comfort, we expect this kind of product is suitable across PVs to CV segment.
What are your growth plans for “Dark Green UV Cut Glass”?
As explained above, we are conducting joint trials with the OEMs to reinforce the effectiveness of this new offering before it can be introduced on a larger scale in the Indian market.
Once AIS joint trials with HVAC supplier are concluded, which we expect will happen shortly, Dark Green UV cut glass technology will be adapted to other models as well. We expect this trend to grow rapidly in the future.
India is a hot country with average temperatures ranging from 35°C to 37°C and going up to even 45°C and beyond under extreme conditions. It is no wonder then that when AIS conducted an independent research on consumer preferences with respect to automotive glazing, lesser heat inside the cabin stood out as one of the most desirable attribute for respondents. Apart from the thermal discomfort, sunlight also transmits harmful UV radiation which is detrimental for our skin and is responsible for various skin related disorders like tanning, skin cancer etc. The demand for heat control products is on the rise and OEMs have already introduced AIS products like solar control glass, UV cut glass, acoustic and IR cut windscreens on the domestic models.
In our quest to offer better solutions, AIS has worked extensively to develop this unique offering (called Dark Green UV Cut glass), for the Indian market which apart from reducing the thermal load inside the cabin, also eliminates the UV radiation by more than 80 percent.
This product is revolutionary as it perfectly complies with the Indian regulation for light transmission of 50 percent for sidelites and also provides a lifetime solution as opposed to tinted films (LT<50 per cent) films which have already been banned for use by honourable Supreme Court in India.
During our internal tests with Dark Green UV Cut glass, we have seen a drop in cabin temperature by close to 2°C compared to current green glass, which would certainly impact fuel efficiency.
