With the severe second wave of COVID-19, the death toll in India has reached as high as 4,329 daily. The country has not announced a complete lockdown yet but at least 27 states are currently under a lockdown.
According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the demand for automobiles has been greatly affected. As per Shashank Srivastava, Senior Executive Director of Sales & Marketing, Maruti Suzuki, COVID 2.0 has badly affected the industry. He said that about 81% of the outlets were closed.
As stated by Vinkesh Gulati, President, Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations, the commercial vehicles and two-wheeler segment are also not having any positive scenario.
Yadvinder Singh Guleria, Director of Sales & Marketing, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter, said that if the month-on-month data is compared from April to May, then things have gone down for the worse. He said that the retail sales have gone down by 65%.
According to Deepak Jain, President, The Automotive Component Manufacturers Association, the supply chains were already quite fragile during the first wave of Covid-19 but with the second wave, it has become more challenging for the companies to operate and survive.
The industry was already recovering from last year’s COVID wave and the second wave has made the situation even worse in the country.
