BorgWarner can supply automakers in India with tailor-made solutions
Engineering change to embrace BS VI
HMIL recovers 98% of last year’s domestic sales volume in July
BorgWarner - a global leader in propulsion system solutions - has three production plants and one technical center in India. With India set to adopt BS VI emission norms, auto component suppliers are looking at huge business opportunities. BorgWarner has been supporting customers in India with proven technologies that enable optimised fuel economy and reduced emissions for many years, says Christopher Lanker, VP & GM, Asia - Borgwarner Emissions, Thermal and Turbo Systems.
How is BorgWarner aiding engine developments in automotive industry?
BorgWarner has been a leader in propulsion system solutions for decades, helping automakers evolve to clean and energy-efficient technology solutions. Today that means offering technologies that not only continue to increase the efficiencies of combustion engines, but also new propulsion systems including hybrid and electric. Our extensive product portfolio is well balanced to provide solutions for every type of vehicle. We identify technology with the greatest potential impact and make it available on a mass level at a right price. In addition, it can be applied to a wide range of vehicle segments, for example various hybrid drive architectures. Some of our components are compatible with existing vehicle platforms and enable cost-effective and fast hybridization if necessary.
What kind of opportunities are you looking at as automakers in India shift to BS VI emission norms? Our technological solutions – for combustion, hybrid or electric propulsion – are always developed to meet the requirements of emission standards and fuel economy. At the same time, they are designed to support the best driving performance. We are prepared to supply automakers in India with the tailor-made solutions they need for their manufacturing process no matter what propulsion systems they employ.
Are you looking to produce more products from global product portfolio in India? If yes, please elaborate?
Although, with our three production plants and one technical center in India, we focus on the particular needs of the Indian automotive market. However, we also manufacture solutions for global sales. For instance, considering the market requirements, one of our plants in India has state-of-the-art production lines for viscous and visctronic fan and fan drives which is being used for local as well as export markets.
Due to BS VI, demand for petrol driven vehicles is likely to be more than diesel. How is your company gearing up for this change?
BorgWarner has been supporting customers in India with proven technologies that enable optimised fuel economy and reduced emissions for many years. Our latest project: In preparation for production to start in 2021 we are supplying newly developed EGR components for a new 1.5-liter gasoline engine of a market leading Indian passenger car manufacturer. Our business of viscous and visctronic fan and fan drives are giving customers the required benefits for upcoming norms and feel it will drive our growth too. Another Business division of ours expanded its manufacturing operations last year to serve the emerging demand in the next few years. The company brought in a new product line - variable cam timing (VCT) systems - in its manufacturing operations. VCT systems are aimed at helping vehicle manufacturers improve fuel economy, reliability and engine efficiency. All of our solutions are designed to meet BS VI and CAFE CO2 emission standards.
What are emerging trends in automotive engine technology? And how is your company tapping into these trends?
Current mobility trends – including autonomous vehicles, connected cars, ride-sharing, and the continued push to increase efficiencies – all require clean and efficient propulsion systems to get vehicles from point A to point B. BorgWarner is supplying these systems. Our goal to be a product leader means staying ahead of market trends and provide global solutions suited to the demands of local OEMs.
