The JV company Elcon Banshu Wiring Systems (EBWS) Pvt Ltd will manufacture wire harnesses for leading automotive OEMs in the world’s fourth-largest automobile market. Other than two-wheelers, the JV will progressively also cater to construction equipment and commercial vehicle segments, reports Manish Pant.
TSharma.he Delhi NCR headquartered automotive component manufacturer Elconconnectors Cables Pvt. Ltd. entered into a JV with the Indonesia-based wiring harness manufacturer PT Banshu Group and PT Askara Internal to manufacture wiring harness in India for the country’s burgeoning two-wheeler market. However, APF has learned that the newly formed entity also has its eyes set on construction equipment and commercial vehicle segments as part of its long-term strategy. In August 2019, the companies had announced an investment of Rs 200 million to construct an ultra-modern manufacturing facility in Greater Noida near New Delhi for the purpose.
Speaking to APF, Vishal Sharma, Managing Director, Elconconnectors Cables said, “As a well-established player in Indonesia and Japan, Banshu is already supplying wire harness to several OEMs in the region and maintains a high-level of parts per million (PPM) or one defect for a million parts manufactured. And that is what eventually made us proceed with this tie-up with them.”
Established in 2012, Elconconnectors Cables deals in a wide range of connectors, fuse boxes, fuse box covers, automotive relays and other parts of a wiring harness.
The JV, which will initially focus on the two-wheeler segment, will subsequently start production for construction equipment as well as commercial vehicle segments. “We will be following the mantra of QCDDM or quality, cost, delivery, development and management at EBWS. That is why we have decided to move ahead with our product expansion in a phased manner. For instance, our strategy for the two-wheeler segment will have several phases as the market is likely to grow to over 50 million in the coming years,” informed Sharma.
As for the construction equipment and commercial vehicles, a final call on the timelines for entering those verticals will be taken after a thorough internal assessment by the EBWS board.
EMISSION NORMS OFFER GROWTH POTENTIAL
The facility will also house a large R&D centre. The newly formed entity will be called Elcon Banshu Wiring System (EBWS) Pvt. Ltd and shall manufacture customised wiring harness for OEMs in multiple segments. The terms of the JV also include technology transfer from Banshu to Elconconnectors Cables.
Deddy Harsono, Owner & Director, PT Banshu Indonesia told the magazine, “India provides a big business opportunity for manufacturers of wiring harness who can supply quality products owing to the upcoming emission norms that will come into force by 2020. Banshu has a team of engineering experts working dedicatedly on developing the wiring harness technology for over a decade.”
As Banshu already supplies wire harnesses to major construction equipment makers in Japan and Indonesia, Harsono was also very upbeat about their eventual foray into the segment here.
Akihiko Yoneda, President Director, PT Banshu Japan opined, “The JV will enable us to cater to the demand of one of the fastest-growing automotive markets globally.”
It will deliver environment-friendly solutions to meet the BS-VI emission regulations and address the menace of pollution, which is a matter of serious concern in especially India’s rapidly expanding cities.
