According to The Automotive Export Manual Report, despite lengthy Covid-19 lockdowns, India was the top country for vehicle imports into South Africa. Also, Volkswagen Polo Vivo was the only vehicle in this segment that was manufactured locally in South Africa.
According to Rajesh Gupta, CEO, Mahindra SA, it is good news that South African motorists are inclined to drive bakkies than passenger cars.
He also said that there is a strong bond between India and South Africa as the country promotes Indian products to the rest of the world. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, vehicle exports from South Africa have declined to 271,288 units in 2020. Despite this, the country is optimistic about the automotive industry for the current year because of the production extended in India.
