Isuzu Motors India has launched the D-Max pickup truck range in India at a special launch price of Rs 5.99 lakh. Available in three variants, the pickup truck is available in two cab types and a two load bed varieties. The choice of cab includes one with more cabin space behind the seats (called space cab), and the one without. Similarly the load bay could be had with a flat deck design, or an arched design. The load body measures 1.5m in length. Aimed at small businesses, affluent farmers, small fleet operators and owners, the D-Max is powered by a 134bhp, 2.5-litre common-rail turbo-diesel engine and a five-speed manual transmission. Built at Hindustan Motors' Chennai plant, the D-Max is accompanied by the MU-7 SUV in India. Current local content is limited to tyres and a few other bits according to the sources at Isuzu. The aim is to reach 50 per cent localisation by the time the plant Isuzu is building at Sri City, Chittoor, goes on stream in early 2016. Isuzu is investing Rs 3,000 Crore towards the facility, which will have a capacity to build 1,20,000 units. Currently, Isuzu is concentrating on the expansion of its dealer network, and will have appointed nine dealers by mid-2014. It will have 60 dealers across the country by the time the production gets underway at Sri City.
