2W segment is ramping up production faster than 4W: Anurag Garg
JBM Group’s auto components division has been in business for over three decades and has attained a colossal presence by being able to offer better manufacturing techniques coupled with global quality standards, supported by its in-house design and engineering divisions. Its portfolio includes skin panels, BIW parts, axles, exhaust systems, chassis & suspension wheel-assemblies, welded assemblies, tubes and tubular manipulations for manufacturers of 2W, 3W, commercial vehicle, construction & farm equipment. In this interview with Rakesh Rao, Nishant Arya, Executive Director, JBM Group, elaborates on how changes in emission norms and drive towards electrification are changing the dynamics of axles industry.
What types of products does your company supply in axles space?
JBM Group is a tier-1 supplier of structural auto systems and assemblies to almost all auto OEMs in the country. With vehicle dynamics undergoing rapid complexities owing to safety and crash protocols, we have aligned ourselves very closely with our customers in the product development process to match and surpass the given standards consistently. We manufacture axle assemblies for passenger vehicles like rear twist axle beam and rear rigid axle.
How is the demand for your products (axles & axle components/parts)?
In most of the cases, JBM is a supplier of choice for the OEMs across the various sheet metal products categories that we cater to. Our volumes are directly aligned with the production volumes of our customers.
Stringent government norms to curtail emissions and increase fuel efficiency are leading to increase in R&D on auto components. How are manufacturers of axles & axle components/parts reacting to this trend?
Entire manufacturing ecosystem is undergoing a phenomenal shift. At JBM, we are investing substantially in R&D globally, having special focus on the recently announced regulations and norms targeted towards vehicle safety and efficiency. In India, our R&D centres have been duly recognised by the Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India. We are focusing on TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) principle, wherein, the intent is driving optimum value and cost optimization from our products & solutions while constantly evolving and upgrading the product quality and durability standards.
How will rise in demand for electric vehicles lead to changes in axles market?
Vehicle performance is the key criteria when it comes to electric vehicles. We are working towards reducing the weight of the components without compromising on the product quality that will reflect positively on performance. Usage of high strength steel and application of technologies such as Tailored Welded Blanks (TWBs) are being undertaken at JBM to achieve light-weighting of parts.
How is your company preparing for these changes?
We are focusing on areas like light weighting and exploring the ways to use alternate metals. Our in-house engineering & design team has come up with TWBs which eliminate the need to have reinforcement parts, reduce steel consumption and decrease the weight of the components. Moreover, JBM is getting ready for a plethora of opportunities on the technology front. We are aligned with the end consumer to provide and customise solutions to multiple platforms single-handedly.
What are your growth plans for boosting axles business?
In the current era of automation, leapfrog advancements are shaping the automotive industry. Disruptive innovation is becoming the order of the day. At JBM, we are becoming more robust by adopting frugal engineering practices, digitisation of production, enabling enhanced processes and differentiation. We have already started imbibing AI in our auto component business and have more aggressive plans in place. We intend to cater to our customers as a full service supplier to meet their domestic and global requirements in line with government regulations.
