In May, Maruti Suzuki has overtaken Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) to become India’s largest utility vehicle (UV) maker. The manufacturer of Brezza and SCross vehicles has overcome the sustained dominance from the maker of Scorpio and Bolero for the second successive month, underscoring the shifting trends on the utility vehicle leader board. Led by robust demand for its compact SUV Vitara Brezza and the Ertiga MPV, Maruti Suzuki sold 5,500 more SUVs than Mahindra & Mahindra in the first two months of FY18. Industry figures show that M&M sold 18,363 units in April and 19,331units in May, compared with 20,638 units in April for Maruti and 22,608 units in May. In FY17, Mahindra was ahead of Maruti Suzuki by 20,000 units. In the calendar year of 2017 (January to May), Mahindra is still ahead of Maruti Suzuki by 5,000 units. The cumulative utility vehicle sales of Maruti Suzuki in the two months of FY18 stood at 43,246 units, compared with 37,694 units for Mahindra & Mahindra for the same period.
