STMicroelectronics has unveiled ALED6000 single-chip automotive LED driver which comes with an integrated DC/DC converter. It is a low-BoM solution that offers design flexibility and also keeps the lighting intensity consistent.
The ALED6000 drives a single string of LEDs that are suitable for exterior lighting like headlights, rear lights, daytime running lights, stop lights, interior lighting, and turn signals. It also has a wide input-voltage range of 4.5V to 61V. The ALED6000 has a dedicated pin to apply the PWM control signal and it also implements digital dimming. It also has a sync pin and enables pin to ensure low noise in multi-device applications. The output current is monitored efficiently with a sense resistor and has an accurate output current within 3.2%. The quiescent current is extremely low. Another exciting feature is a VBIAS auxiliary-input pin and pulse-skipping operation at light load. This ensures high efficiency across the load range.
There is an on-chip converter that allows buck/boost, buck, and floating-boost topologies that give flexibility to power LED strings which handle supply fluctuations and require a voltage above or below the input voltage. . The converter can operate in low-dropout mode with 100% duty cycle. In case of over-current, the ALED6000 ensures pulse-by-pulse protection so as to limit the output current. The soft-start circuitry limits inrush current and thermal protection with auto-recovery. The switching frequency is limited and converted by the output-current limit. This allows the inductor to be optimized for high energy efficiency, small size, fast dynamic response, and low output ripple.
ALED6000 automotive LED driver, qualified by AEC-Q100 is now in production in the HTSSOP16 package.
