In November 2019, Tata Motors opened a futuristic tech center at the Engineering Research Center (ERC) Pune for testing and developing new cutting-edge powertrain solutions for all its products. In this interview, Rajendra Petkar, Chief Technology Officer at Tata Motors, highlights on how the company is gearing for the new and evolving market requirements.
What is the significance of the new Advance Power Systems Engineering Tech Center in Pune for Tata Motors and development of new engine technology/solution?
The Advance Power Systems Engineering Tech Center is a futuristic tech center, which will play a key role in engineering, testing and developing cutting-edge powertrain solutions for all of our products, bringing in synergies across passenger vehicles (PV), commercial vehicles (CV) and electric vehicles (EV) businesses.
This new world-class facility provides end to end solutions for powertrain development. While meeting current & future legislative requirements of BS VI (phase 1 & 2), fuel efficiency norms (CAFE), Real Driving Emissions (RDE), the facility is also capable of developing comprehensive electrification solutions like hybrids, full battery EVs (BEVs) & fuel-cell based powertrain.
With the auto industry witnessing mobility disruptions around CESS (Connected, Electrified, Safe & Shared), this facility will go a long way in supporting our customer-oriented agenda.
This facility is equipped to meet the development, calibration & type approval requirement for light & heavy-duty powertrains. This center reiterates Tata Motors’ commitment to offer their customers a wide range of clean, sustainable technologies, ultimately meeting aspirations.
How is Tata Motors gearing up for BS VI emission norms (in terms of changes in engine technology, parts and auxiliaries)?
We are upgrading our portfolio right from the Iris 0.5 ton minivan to 55 ton trucks and large buses, from a Tiago hatchback to Harrier SUV for the Indian market. There are 40 different powertrain combinations (engine & transmissions) ready. These also include upgrades to CNG, LPG, petrol and diesel engine with manual, automatic and automated manual transmission.
For leapfrogging to BS VI from BS IV, we adapted a balanced approach of early partnering with the experienced consultants and suppliers. This was not done at full engine or vehicle level, but we utilised their available experience through our own competence & developed methods. Also the learnings gained from one program have been horizontally deployed across others.
We looked at the existing vehicle combinations and those not make engineering & business sense have been rationalised. This also ensured higher commonisation of parts, quicker time to market and lower costs, owing to NewGen modular platforms.
The planned rationalising of our product portfolio will deliver 400 lead vehicle plus major category programs. All the vehicle combinations, including different body style and chassis, would be more than 1,000, slated to be launched from 2020 onwards.
We also took the benefit of the digital product development. We have a lot of capabilities within digital product engineering.
Overall, we are fully geared up for transition to BS VI.
Are you also focusing on hybrids, CNG and BS VII engine developments? If yes, please elaborate
Both our new architecture on PV, the ALFA & OMEGA Arc are capable of delivering hybrids & EVs, but we will leverage them only as and when required. At the moment focus is on BS VI and we have to get over the peak workload. Even on the CV side, we have demonstrated the capability on hybrids through developing CNG series hybrid buses that ply in Madrid (2012) and series hybrid buses for MMRDA (2017).
On CNG front, we are the market leaders on CV side and horizontal deployment of technology & processes is also being ensured on PV side.
As for BS VII is concerned, it is too early to undertake a series project, but we have got a lot of insightful data from the ongoing BS VI development, which will be useful for Phase 2 of BS VI, RDE and also BS VII.
