…says Anupam Jaiswal, Business Director (Auto – India & ASEAN) – Transportation & Industrial, DuPont, as he tracks development in the Indian automotive industry to make vehicles safer.
Why are companies focusing on incorporating advanced safety systems in vehicles?
As per the World Resources Institute, India has the worst safety record in the world. Around 149000 people lost their lives on Indian roads in 2018 alone. Apart from the accidents, pollution emanating from vehicles is a major concern in India. These aspects cannot be overlooked by the auto OEM’s and policy makers.
Over the last decade or so, automobile manufacturers have made significant progress on the environmental front by adopting stringent emission regulations. However, it is not enough that today’s vehicles be fuel-efficient. Consumers want vehicles that are safe, comfortable and provide a great driving experience. This trend is making automobile manufacturers focus on achieving technical alignment with international safety standards. And therefore, manufacturers are adopting advanced safety measures. Secondly, with the evolving technologies and the gradual shift towards connected cars, the focus is more on incorporating safety in the early design stage so that safety can be achieved in each phase.
Going forward, it is quite evident that rising consumer awareness, government policy, widespread technology adoption, and with active support from vehicle manufacturers, the vehicular safety environment in the country is set to witness a paradigm shift. And this will prove very advantageous for the end-consumer.
How DuPont is helping OEMs and their suppliers in ensuring vehicle safety?
DuPont has been the preferred partner for automotive industry since decades. Today, vehicle safety systems developed with key contributions from DuPont’s science and technologies are helping reduce injuries and improve safety all over the world. For instance, from the first airbag system and safety belt mechanisms to the latest collision-avoidance electronic materials and technologies, we continue to set the standard for performance in active and passive safety systems. Our renewably sourced materials give design engineers another way to separate their vehicles from the competition. For example, DuPont Hytrel RS is the industry’s first renewably-sourced thermoplastic elastomer used in airbag systems. Our materials for automotive interiors and safety systems help protect drivers and passengers while enhancing the passenger driving experience. Together, with our OEM partners, we are creating products that are safer, more energy-efficient, produce fewer greenhouse gases, and help minimise our customers’ eco-footprint.
Why is it important to give due consideration to safety while developing and designing new auto models?
With automotive industry being one of the most innovative industry and a fast adopter of consumer trends and new technologies, it is no doubt that safety aspects should be considered right at the design stage of the vehicle. Because at this stage, manufacturers can consider vehicles not only in terms of utility but more often in terms of comfort and safety.
However, with consumers becoming more aware and with the Indian government bringing in stringent regulations around vehicular safety, the car manufacturers are increasingly trying to balance the need to design low-emission, fuel-efficient vehicles without compromising on performance, comfort, cost or safety. And therefore, it’s important that safety should be considered right at the design and development stage.
What kinds of opportunities are you looking to tap in India?
Transportation is evolving to meet the needs of passengers and the planet. We see a future where tomorrow’s cars will be electric, autonomous, shared and connected to each other and the world. And in all this vehicular safety will play a very crucial role. Currently, we work with almost all players in the market including Hyundai, Toyota, Suzuki, Mahindra and Tata on sustainable mobility solutions such as light-weighting, emission reduction and safety. As they shift towards electrification, we will be there as a partner of choice. We will evolve or help the technology evolve.
