The just concluded month of April witnessed a fierce battle of the fittest passenger vehicles for the top ten slots in the pecking order. An SUV managed to edge out the hatchbacks to garner the top slot. Leading this attack was the compact Ford EcoSport with exports of 7812 units in April 2017 compared to 6179 units notched in April 2016. The Ford EcoSport that was productionised in 2013 at the American carmakers Chennai facility is also assembled in Brazil, Thailand and Russia. From 2018 it is expected to be shipped out to the US to be part of the large SUV market there. The compact SUV retained its top position in exports as did the General Motors Beat at close second position. GM recently announced plans to stop domestic sales in India but will continue to export from its Talegaon plant in Maharastra where the Beat is made.
