Chennai, Tamil Nadu
Chennai-based auto components major Lucas TVS has signed an agreement with 24M for its advanced ‘SemiSolid’ electrode technology.
24M has a lithium-ion battery manufacturing process that is more modular, efficient and low cost. Spun out of MIT, it has partnerships with EV battery companies and battery storage system makers like Kyocera from Japan, Eguana Technologies from Canada and Freyr from Norway.
24M’s patented cell design provides cost advantages, safety, reliability and traceability by eliminating potential metal contamination, the most common cause of shorts in conventional lithium-ion cells. It has created a binder-free manufacturing process that enables electrodes four to five times thicker than other lithium cells. It removes inactive material set like copper, aluminium and cell separator, reducing costs and complexity.
Lucas TVS would be opening a Gigafactory in Thervoy Kandigai, Gummudipundi, by the second half of 2023. It would also build up production capacity to 10GWh in two stages. It would also construct plants around the country at later dates.
Lucas TVS would build products in Pouch and Prismatic cell formats with high energy density. The manufactured cells are for e-mobility, stationary energy storage systems like grid-scale, lead-acid battery replacement and complete battery solutions. It aims to replace lead-acid batteries for various applications and be a part of the PLI scheme for battery manufacturing.
