Getting a foothold in India for his Tesla is not going to be easy for Elon Musk. He stated that, he is still working through a lot of challenges with the government, in a Twitter post.
The statement was his reply to a user who wanted to know if there was any update on Tesla’s launch in the country. Musk has been pushing for his cars in India since 2019. Musk's tweet has drawn sharp criticism from the Centre. Tesla can bring in cars in CKD (completely knocked down) form with zero duty and assemble and sell them here. India has put in place a PLI scheme for auto sector, particularly EVs, under which Tesla will get benefit if they produce here.
By such tweets, Tesla is trying to put pressure on government using social media, and this is not the first time, govt sources said, adding that Musk was looking to get the Centre reduce import duties on cars without any commitment of producing in India.
The billionaire has said a factory in India is “quite likely” if the California-based carmaker can first test the waters by importing vehicles. The government has asked the EV maker to ramp up local procurement and share detailed manufacturing plans; Musk has demanded lower taxes so that Tesla can start off by selling imported vehicles at a cheaper price in a budget conscious market.
