Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the apex automotive industry body, and Automotive Tyre Manufacturers’ Association (ATMA) have jointly initiated a Tri Series on “Road Safety Advocacy’’.

Recently, Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways, had expressed his concern on increasing road safety and asked SIAM to consider making 6 Airbags mandatory in every car sold in India.

Gadkari shared his vision to achieve a 50% reduction in road accident deaths by 2025 and zero accidents and deaths by 2030. He mandated safety audits at all stages of road development to reduce accidents.

SIAM requested more time to implement the dual airbags rule on existing car models in light of the coronavirus pandemic. The government has accordingly extended the deadline till December 31, 2021.
